Business Foundation & Legal

Months 1–2 · Do this first, everything builds on it
Choose business structure & state of incorporation
LLC is ideal for small importers — limits personal liability, simple taxes. Delaware or your home state. ~$100–$500 filing fee.
File Articles of Organization / LLC formation
File online with your state's Secretary of State. Get your Certificate of Organization.
Obtain EIN (Employer Identification Number)
Free from IRS.gov. Required to open business bank accounts, file taxes, and import goods into the US.
Open a dedicated business bank account
Keep business and personal finances completely separate. Mercury, Relay, or a local bank are good options for small importers.
Financial
Apply for Importer of Record (IOR) status
You need an IOR number with US Customs (CBP) to legally import goods. File CBP Form 5106. This is your identity for all import shipments.
Register with FDA as Food Facility (if applicable)
If you're the importer/distributor, register at FDA's Unified Registration System. Free. Required for importing food into the US.
Hire a licensed US Customs Broker
A customs broker handles your import documentation, duties, and FDA entry for each shipment. Essential for food imports. Budget $150–$500 per shipment.
Logistics
Open business credit card & accounting software
QuickBooks, Wave (free), or Xero. Track all expenses from day one for tax purposes. You'll need this when calculating cost of goods sold.
Financial
Research US import duties & HTS code for olive oil
HTS code 1509.10.20 or 1509.10.40 for extra virgin olive oil from Morocco. Duty rates vary. Morocco has a US Free Trade Agreement — verify if you qualify for reduced duties.
02

Brand, Trademark & Copyright

Months 1–3 · Start immediately — trademark takes 8–14 months
Conduct trademark clearance search
Search USPTO.gov TESS database for "Dar al Beida" and similar names in Class 29 (olive oil, food products). Hire a trademark attorney if possible (~$300–$500 search fee).
File federal trademark application (USPTO)
File on TEAS Plus ($250/class) or TEAS Standard ($350/class). File for both the word mark "Dar al Beida" and your logo as separate marks. Class 29 covers olive oil. Processing: 8–14 months.
Register the copyright for your label design
Copyright.gov — register the label artwork for ~$65. Copyright is automatic but registration gives you legal standing to sue infringers and collect statutory damages.
Register domain name & social media handles
Secure daralbeida.com and @daralbeida on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest. Do this before the trademark is approved — you own your brand online now.
Branding
Finalize complete brand identity system
Extend your label design into a full brand guide: typography rules, color palette (CMYK/Pantone/HEX values), logo variations (full color, single color, reversed), usage rules, brand voice and tone.
Branding
Build your brand website
Shopify or Squarespace for e-commerce capability. Include: brand story, sourcing info, recipe blog (great for SEO), shop page, wholesale inquiry page. A website adds legitimacy for Amazon Brand Registry.
Branding
Plan & create brand content library
Professional photos of the product, lifestyle shots, Morocco sourcing story images, video content. This feeds Amazon listing images, social media, and ads. Budget $500–$2,000 for a photographer.
Branding
03

Product Sourcing & Supplier

Months 2–4 · The heart of your business
Research & vet Moroccan olive oil producers
Use trade organizations (Maroc Export, ONSSA), trade shows (SIAL, Fancy Food Show), or contact Moroccan embassies/trade offices. Visit estates in Fez, Meknes, Marrakech, or Béni Mellal regions.
Product
Request samples & conduct taste testing
Get samples from 3–5 producers. Evaluate: taste profile, acidity level, color, aroma. Consider getting a professional olive oil tasting panel review.
Product
Obtain lab testing & certifications from supplier
Request: COA (Certificate of Analysis) confirming EVOO grade, free fatty acid level (≤0.8%), peroxide value, polyphenol content. Also get: organic certification (if applicable), PDO/PGI certificates if positioning as premium.
Product
Negotiate supply agreement & pricing
Lock in: price per liter (in bulk), minimum order quantities, payment terms (30% deposit / 70% on BL), quality guarantees, and exclusivity terms (optional). Get everything in a written contract.
Product
Decide: bulk oil + US bottling vs. pre-bottled in Morocco
Bulk oil shipped and bottled in the US is often cheaper per unit. Pre-bottled in Morocco saves US production costs but adds weight/breakage risk. Each option changes your label requirements and FDA process.
Product
Source bottles, caps & closures
Options: dark glass (protects oil), clear glass (shows color), tin, PET. Find glass suppliers (Vetri Speciali, Saverglass, Berlin Packaging). Order samples first. FBA requires no fragile-only items — use proper packing.
Product
Get independent US lab testing done on your oil
Before selling, test through a USDA or ISO-accredited lab (UC Davis Olive Center, Alpha Analytics). Confirms your EVOO claims. ~$200–$500. Protects you legally and enables marketing claims.
Product
Determine nutrition facts for your specific oil
You need an FDA-compliant Nutrition Facts panel. Generate via lab testing or use an FDA-approved database. Olive oil is standard (120 cal, 14g fat, etc.) but must be specific to your product.
04

Export, Import & Logistics

Months 3–5 · Plan this before your first shipment
Arrange export documentation in Morocco
Your Moroccan supplier handles most of this. Required: Certificate of Origin, Phytosanitary Certificate (if needed), Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Export License (if >certain volume).
Logistics
Choose freight forwarder (Morocco → US)
For small/first shipments, use a freight forwarder who handles FCL (Full Container Load) or LCL (Less than Container Load). Compare quotes from Flexport, Freightos, or local brokers. Air freight for small test orders.
Logistics
Prepare Prior Notice to FDA (required for food imports)
Under Bioterrorism Act, you must submit FDA Prior Notice at least 2 hours before arrival (air) or 8 hours (sea). File via FDA's Prior Notice System Interface. Your customs broker can do this.
Set up US warehouse / 3PL storage (if not going direct to FBA)
If you need to receive bulk, bottle, label, and prep before sending to Amazon FBA, you need a 3PL (third-party logistics) or food-grade warehouse. Find one near a major port (LA, NY, Savannah).
Logistics
Understand and budget for US import duties
Verify Morocco's duty rate under the US–Morocco FTA. You may qualify for preferential tariff rates. Your customs broker calculates this. Also factor in: MPF (merchandise processing fee), Harbor Maintenance Fee.
Financial
Get cargo insurance
Insure your shipment for at least CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight). Oil can leak; glass can break. Don't skip this. ~0.5–1% of cargo value per shipment.
Financial
Plan first test shipment (small quantity)
Before a full container, import a small test batch (50–200 units). Verify everything clears customs smoothly, check label compliance in real life, test product quality on arrival. This is your proof of concept.
Logistics
05

Packaging, Labels & Compliance

Months 3–5 · FDA compliance is non-negotiable
Finalize FDA-compliant front label
Must include: statement of identity ("Extra Virgin Olive Oil"), net quantity in US and metric units ("33.8 FL OZ / 1L"), brand name. All mandatory elements must be on the Principal Display Panel (PDP).
Design & produce FDA-compliant back label
Required: Nutrition Facts panel (new FDA format post-2020), ingredient list ("Extra Virgin Olive Oil"), country of origin ("Product of Morocco"), distributor/importer name and US address, best by date format.
Get label review from a food regulatory consultant
Hire a food label consultant (ESHA Research, Alchemy Systems, or a regulatory attorney) to review both labels before printing. One compliance mistake = recalled shipment. ~$300–$800 review.
Get UPC barcode for your product(s)
Register with GS1 US (gs1us.org). GS1 Company Prefix: $250+/year for 10 products. Or buy individual GTINs (cheaper for ≤5 SKUs). Required for Amazon, retail, and all barcoding. Do NOT buy cheap barcodes from resellers — Amazon rejects them.
Branding
Source label printer & print production labels
Find a label printer (Sticker Mule, Lightning Labels, Fortis Solutions, local print shops). Order proofs first. Specify: waterproof vinyl, matte/gloss finish, permanent adhesive, die-cut shape. Budget $0.20–$0.80/label at volume.
Branding
Design outer carton / case packaging
Design the master case (corrugated box) that holds multiple bottles for shipping. Needs: item UPC, quantity, product name, weight, fragile/handle with care markings. Amazon also has specific case weight/size limits for FBA.
Logistics
Plan FBA packaging & prep requirements
Amazon requires: FNSKU labels on every unit, poly bagging (for glass/liquid), bubble wrap requirements, suffocation warning stickers on polybags (if >5 inches). Review Amazon's "Packaging and Prep Requirements" guide carefully.

Amazon FBA Setup & Launch

Months 4–6 · Your primary sales channel
Create Amazon Seller Central account (Professional plan)
Go to sell.amazon.com. Professional plan: $39.99/month. Required to sell in restricted categories (grocery/food). You'll need: EIN, bank account, government ID, business info, credit card.
Amazon
Apply for category approval (Grocery & Gourmet Food)
Grocery is a restricted category on Amazon. Submit: invoices from your supplier, product photos, any required certifications. Approval can take 1–4 weeks. You cannot list until approved.
Amazon
Enroll in Amazon Brand Registry
Requires a registered or pending trademark. Gives you: A+ Content, Brand Storefront, Sponsored Brands ads, anti-counterfeit protection, and better listing control. Apply at brandservices.amazon.com.
Amazon
Create your product listing (ASIN)
Write a keyword-optimized title, 5 bullet points, and product description. Research competitors and keywords using Helium 10 or Jungle Scout. Upload 7–9 high-quality images (hero, lifestyle, label close-up, usage shots).
Amazon
Create A+ Content / Brand Story
After Brand Registry approval, add A+ Content: enhanced description with images, comparison charts, brand story module. This significantly increases conversion rates. Include Morocco sourcing story and product quality claims.
Amazon
Generate FNSKU labels & apply to each unit
FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) is Amazon's internal barcode. Print from Seller Central, apply to every bottle. Must cover or be separate from UPC. Required for FBA. Your 3PL or prep service can do this.
Amazon
Create FBA shipment plan in Seller Central
In Seller Central → Inventory → Send to Amazon. Amazon will assign you one or more fulfillment centers. Create box content info (quantity per box), print FBA box labels, book a carrier (Amazon Partnered Carrier for best rates).
Amazon
Ship inventory to Amazon FBA fulfillment center
Use Amazon's Partnered Carrier (UPS/FedEx) for discounted rates. Each carton must have: FBA shipment label on the outside, FNSKU on every unit inside, proper packing (glass bottles require extra cushioning).
Amazon
Set up product pricing & repricing strategy
Research competitor pricing (filter by Prime eligible). For premium EVOO, target $18–$35 for 1L. Factor in: COGS + Amazon fees (8–15% referral) + FBA fees ($3–$6/unit for oil) + PPC budget + desired margin.
Financial
Set up Amazon PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising campaigns
Launch Sponsored Products campaigns (auto first, then manual). Target keywords: "moroccan olive oil," "extra virgin olive oil," "premium olive oil." Budget $10–$30/day to start. You need reviews before scaling spend.
Marketing
Enroll in Amazon Vine (if eligible) or request early reviews
Amazon Vine ($200/ASIN) sends your product to trusted reviewers for honest reviews. Or use Amazon's "Request a Review" button on each order. Reviews are the #1 driver of Amazon sales — you need at least 5–10 to get traction.

Marketing, Advertising & Growth

Month 6+ · Ongoing after launch
Launch Instagram & TikTok content strategy
Post: Morocco estate footage, cooking content, recipe videos, sourcing story. Instagram Reels and TikTok drive massive organic reach for food brands. Aim for 3–5 posts/week. Build audience before ads.
Marketing
Reach out to food influencers & bloggers
Send free product to 20–30 micro-influencers (10K–100K followers) in the food, Mediterranean diet, and cooking niches. Ask for honest reviews and Amazon review links. Nano-influencers often have higher engagement than mega ones.
Marketing
Set up Meta (Facebook/Instagram) ads campaign
Target: foodies, health-conscious, Mediterranean diet, olive oil buyers, ages 28–55, HHI $75K+. Drive to Amazon listing or your Shopify store. Retarget website visitors. Budget $20–$50/day to test.
Marketing
Build an email list & launch email marketing
Offer a recipe e-book or discount in exchange for email signup on your website. Use Klaviyo or Mailchimp. Send: welcome series, new product launches, recipes, Moroccan culture content. Email is your highest-ROI owned channel.
Marketing
Submit to gourmet food press & awards
Enter olive oil competitions: New York International Olive Oil Competition, Los Angeles International EV Olive Oil Competition. Awards = legitimacy, press coverage, and Amazon/website badge. Also pitch to food editors at Bon Appétit, Food52, Epicurious.
Marketing
Attend specialty food trade shows
Fancy Food Show (NYC & SF), Natural Products Expo West (Anaheim). Meet buyers from Whole Foods, Dean & DeLuca, specialty grocery chains. This is your path to retail and wholesale channels beyond Amazon.
Marketing
Set up Google Shopping & search ads
Target branded search terms and category terms ("buy moroccan olive oil," "premium EVOO"). Google Shopping ads drive website direct sales. Higher margin than Amazon since no referral fee.
Marketing
Monitor, optimize & reorder inventory
Watch your Amazon IPI (Inventory Performance Index) score, days of supply, sales velocity. Set reorder points before you run out (lead time is 6–12 weeks for international). Running out of stock kills your ranking.
